TypingMaster India is an independent typing practice platform. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Railway Recruitment Boards or any government body. Requirements below are general guidance — always confirm the current official notification.
Railway clerical recruitment commonly includes a typing skill test for typist and clerk-type posts. In most cases it is qualifying in nature, meaning it does not add to your merit score but you must clear it to be appointed. That changes how you should prepare.
What qualifying means for your strategy
Because the test is pass/fail, there is no reward for exceeding the requirement by a wide margin — but there is a heavy penalty for falling just short. Your goal is a reliable pass, not a personal best.
Practical implications:
- Train for consistency, not peak speed
- Prioritise accuracy — errors are what usually cause a near-miss
- Simulate the full duration repeatedly so an off day still clears the bar
Set your targets
Confirm the required speed and language from the notification, then:
- Train at the required WPM +10 for English
- Train at the required WPM +8 for Hindi
- Hold accuracy above 96% for the full duration
Language and font
If you opt for Hindi, check which font and layout the test uses — Unicode Inscript (Mangal) is common in modern computer-based tests. Practise in exactly that layout; switching late is costly. If you opt for English, practise formal administrative prose rather than casual text.
A six-week preparation block
| Week | Focus | Session length |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Technique audit, fingering, no looking | 15 min daily |
| 2 | Base speed, accuracy above 96% | 15 min daily |
| 3 | Endurance to 5 minutes | 20 min daily |
| 4 | Endurance to full test duration | 20 min daily |
| 5 | Weekly full simulation + error triage | 20 min daily |
| 6 | Taper, maintain, one simulation | 15 min daily |
Simulation checklist
- Full duration, uninterrupted
- No backspace if the test disables corrections
- Desktop keyboard, upright posture
- Formal source passage, not casual text
- Record WPM, accuracy and where your pace dropped
The most common reason candidates fail
Not speed — endurance and nerves. Candidates who only ever practise one-minute tests find their accuracy collapses in the second half of a ten-minute test. Long, boring, full-duration practice is what fixes it.
