SSC-style typing and data entry skill tests are known for two things: a meaningful duration (commonly around ten to fifteen minutes) and strict error handling. Preparation should target both.
Practise without backspace
Several skill tests disable corrections entirely. If yours does, practising with backspace available trains exactly the wrong instinct — you learn to fix, hesitate and lose rhythm.
Run at least half your sessions with a strict rule: type through every error and do not stop. It feels uncomfortable for a week, then it becomes normal, and your uncorrected accuracy rises noticeably.
Match the duration exactly
A ten-minute test is an endurance event. Build up to it:
- Week 1–2: 3-minute continuous passages
- Week 3–4: 5-minute continuous passages
- Week 5 onward: full-duration passages, twice a week
Note the minute at which your speed drops. That is your training edge — push it later week by week.
Accuracy discipline
Where errors are penalised, effective score matters more than raw speed. A useful exercise: after each practice run, recompute your score with the penalty applied. Most candidates discover their optimal pace is about 5% below their maximum.
Data entry variants
Some posts assess key depressions per hour on data-entry-style material rather than prose. That means:
- Numbers, dates, amounts and codes
- Frequent shift and symbol use
- Numeric keypad fluency
If your post is data entry, at least two sessions a week should be numeric drills, not prose.
Working from a printed passage
Where the source is printed rather than on screen, your eyes leave the monitor. Practise it deliberately: print a page, place it to the left of your keyboard, and type without looking at either the paper mid-word or the keyboard. Find your place by finger position, not by re-reading.
Two weeks out
- One full simulation every two or three days
- No new technique changes
- Keep the sessions short enough to stay fresh
- Confirm the exam-day keyboard type and practise on something similar
